What is Military Time?
Military time is a 24-hour clock system used by armed forces worldwide to avoid ambiguity between AM and PM. Instead of resetting at noon, the clock continues from 1300 (1:00 PM) to 2359 (11:59 PM), then resets at 0000 (midnight).
How to Convert
For times after 12:59 PM, add 12 to the hour. For example, 3:30 PM becomes 1530. For times before 1:00 PM, simply remove the colon and add a leading zero if needed. For example, 9:15 AM becomes 0915.
Military time vs EST
Military time is a clock format; EST is a time zone. A value such as 1800 is incomplete without a zone. Use the live Eastern card above for the current DST-aware Eastern time, and use Zulu when a globally unambiguous reference is required.
Midnight and noon
Midnight is 0000 and noon is 1200. Times from 0000 through 1159 are AM; 1200 through 2359 are PM. Military time does not use an AM or PM suffix.
